This original design was based off of a circle quilt I saw in a book that was made back in the early 1800's. The original quilted had used pinks on white and had pieced large sunflowers at the top and bottom. I left off the sunflowers and added the mariners compass in the corners and the rose of Sharon applique changing the back ground to black and updating the piecing colors for a more modern twist. Purple variegated thread was used to quilt feathered vines in side of each triangle circle and for the feathers coming out of the vases in each corner. Continuous curves with a swirl and a leaf were used in half of the triangles that make up the circles and concentric lines were quilted in the other half. Gold metallic thread was used to quilt each of the Grecian urns in the four corners, and each mariners compass was quilted with a combination of feathers and curved crosshatching. Eleven different background fillers outline the applique work including micro McTavishing, pebbles, swirls and loops, echo quilting, and crosshatching. This quilt won: Best of Show at the River City Roundup; First place, Best of Class, and Best of Lot at the Lancaster County Fair; and 4th place at the NE State Fair.
