This original design was inspired by the MAQS new quilt from and old favorite contest using sunflower blocks. I was think about the contest and looking at sunflower blocks and trying to decide how I was going to get everything done that I needed to (Kids to scouts, laundry, dishes, customer quilts, etc.), and I though how much the sunflower blocks looked like cogs and how nice it would be to have a machine that would magically make my quilts for me, and voila, the Magical Quilting Machine. I used six different sunflower blocks in this piece using a combination of piecing and applique. I quilted additional cogs in the machine using variegated thread, and used micro McTavishing as a background filler. Designs elements such as the lines on the conveyor belt and the rivets in the machine itself were quilted in as were the gauge descriptions and other machine details. This quilt was juried into MQX 2010 and won 4th place original design at the NE State fair, and 4th place wall quilts at the Lancaster County Fair.
